Hello, you largest of tigers, you Siberian Tigers... Post below: In a well-crafted written response, please explain a theme from "The Man in the Black Suit." Make sure to provide relevant and specific detail to support your claim. have fun, and be great!
In “The Man in The Black Suit” Stephen King creates a theme to show a loss of innocence in his story. One reason to back up this claim that the story is set just before WWI and this was was a “loss of innocence.” Another reason to support the theme is on page 66 when Gary had stole his family bible where it says, “My father looked at the old Bible, swelled with family documents and pictures, and I thought he’d told me to put it back, but he didn’t.”
ReplyDeleteThe theme in “The Man in the Black Suit” is that once innocence is lost it’s gone forever. I think that in the story Gary used to think he was good and holy but soon realized that wasn’t enough when he was running from the devil and it had him question all he had learned in his church, basically, all he had learned his whole life.
ReplyDeleteA theme from "The Man in the Black Suit" is the world is not fair since sometimes bad things happen to the innocence. It is the theme because Stephen King wrote,"... I was had done nothing for which he might legitimately fear the devil either . . . and yet the Devil came," on page 69. Gary was always a good kid and didn't deserve anything bad, but yet the Devil still came.
ReplyDeleteA theme from "The Man in the Black Suit" written by Stephen King includes the uncertainty of the future and what is going to happen next. One piece of evidence includes Gary the protagonist talking to his father. "But don't you go too far in the woods," he told me. "Not beyond where it splits." "No, sir." " Promise me." "Yessir, I promise." This portion of the short story portrays a literary term named as Foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is when the author is giving a hint as to something that is going to happen next, in this example it definitely shows that something is obviously going to happen next. This plays along with the theme, uncertainty of the future. In the next example, the Devil is hungry and tells Gary that if he had eaten him he would be in heaven with his mom. "I'm just so hungry," he said, both petulant and teasing. "And you won't want to live without your precious mommy, anyhow, take my word for it." These quotations also show the uncertainty of what is going to happen next. Will Gary live or will he get devoured by the ravenous devil and be gone forever? No one will find out until they read the horror and suspenseful short story "The Man in the Black Suit" by Stephen King.
ReplyDeleteIn the story The Man In The Black Suit the theme is the loss of the innocence. One reason why I thought this was the theme of the book was because it states;"It was 1914, the summer after my brother Dan died in the west field and three years before America got into World War I." I chose this quote because in World War I there was a huge loss of innocent people who fought to their deaths. Another quote supporting the theme was;"It was the bee that existed, only that, the bee that killed my brother." In this quote Gary's brother died from an innocent bee sting. From these quotes that I used from the story, this is why I thought the theme of the book was the loss of the innocence.

ReplyDeleteThe story,“The Man in the Black Suit”by Stephen King, takes place in the town Motton. The theme, which is the loss of innocence, is revealed when nine year old Gary goes into the woods and sees the devil. I will be showing three examples of why I know this is the theme.
One example of the theme the loss of innocence is when Gary's parents tell him not to go where the stream forks. Instead of obeying his parents he goes past the fork in the stream. In the first paragraph Gary says , “I’ve never told anyone what happened at the fork stream.”Another piece of evidence for this is on page forty eight .Gary’s mom says “Don’t you go too far in the woods, not beyond where it splits.”
The next example of the theme the loss of innocence is when Gary has to tell himself that he is a good person. After the flashback he explains to the audience that he's not afraid of the devil and that he is a good man. The evidence that he says this is on page 68 when he says “I tell myself that I need not fear the devil that I have lived a good, kindly life, and I need not fear the devil.”
A final example of the theme of the loss of innocence is when Gary took his mother’s bible without asking her. On page sixty six his father says “Does your mother know you took that?” Gary answers “No, sir”
Those are my examples of the theme the loss of innocence in the story “The man in the black suit.”

ReplyDeleteThe theme of “The Man in the Black Suit” is the world isn’t fair. This is most prominently shown when Gary’s brother died, also when Gary sees the devil, and last when Gary thinks his mother dies.
First Gary’s brother, he dies from a bee sting. We’ll call him brother. Now brother was a nice kid never really did anything bad. But one day he just died, not because of anything he did, just because he is allergic to bees. And this might be unfair, but it’s the world.
Next Gary seeing the devil. He’s went fishing many times, and every time he was fine, never got hurt or saw anything weird. He, like his brother, is a good boy who listens to his parents and goes to church. But randomly one day he sees the devil, and the devil tries to eat Gary. This is not due to any reason.
Lastly something that didn’t happen. When Gary was running from the devil he had a “vision” of his mom dead on the floor. Now this might not have been real, but the message was loud and clear. Gary’s mom was a kind lady, a woman who cared greatly for her family. She had not deserved death but the world really is not fair, and she died.
In conclusion the world might not be fair, as it demonstrates in “ The Man in the Black Suit”, but you should live your life not fearing death, but using it as a force to drive you forward and live everyday to its greatest potential.

ReplyDelete"The Man in the Black Suit" is written by Stephen King. In this story there are different ways to describe the theme. What I think a good theme for this short story is "once innocence is lost, it's lost forever." This means that once your innocence is gone you can't get it back. Stephen King develops this theme while meeting the devil. The devil has to do with this because Gary thinks he can run away and the devil won't come back but, he will come back once Gary is gone. Some not so great themes for this story would be "the theme is, the devil", or "the devil is taking innocence is in the story." Some better examples for the theme would be "bad things happen to good and innocent people", or "Stephen King develops the theme of once innocence is lost it's gone for good through the protagonist's meeting with the devil in the woods and his old age."
The theme of “The Man in the Black suit” is that the world isn’t fair. One reason is that Gary’s brother died at a young age because of a simple bee sting. The brother had been in the West fed when he was stung by a bee. Gary’s father rushed his brother inside and covered his face with a jacket. Gary never should have gone through that pain at such a young age.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason why life isn’t fair is that Gary had to deal with meeting the devil. He was timid but gracious around the man even if he thought he was scary. Meeting the devil scarred Gary so much that he was terrified of making decisions for the rest of his life. The man even tried to eat Gary, and chased him all over the woods.
Therefore life isn’t always going to be fair no matter what.
In “The Man in The Black Suit” Stephen King crafts the theme of mystery. He did this by creating suspense and at the end a of each suspenseful moment he gives the reader and characters a bit of relief along with some unanswered questions. After the external rush from the devil chasing Gary is gone, Gary makes it out of the forest alive and sees his father. Gary and his father go back into the woods together to get his creel. Then the father after seeing what had happened threw his son’s perfectly good creel into the river to float far away without any other reason than it smelled bad.
ReplyDelete"My father took my creel, looked into it, then went to the railing and threw it over."
This was mind boggling to most readers because Gary previously expressed in his writing how his father did not like to waste anything. For example how the father wanted to go back into the same forest that his son had just come hysterically running and crying out of simply just to get his creel that he left behind or so it seems.
When the father went back into the forest with him he scouted out the place and after smelling the dead grass decided it was time to leave immediately and that his creel was no longer of use to him or anyone perhaps besides the devil.
Stephen King went into detail on every little thing and then kept some moments vague to conjure up curiosity in the readers. This left the story filled to the brim with mystery and the horror of the unknown and it left minds swarming with questions.
The Man In The Black Suit was a great short story with a good lesson and a lot of hidden meanings. In The Man In The Black Suit you always have ti watch out for the hidden meaning and clues like the fork in the river. I also liked this story because it was a short story but covers most of his life. Lastly it shows that you need e be aware of your surroundings and listen to directions. That is why The Man In The Black Suit is a great story story
ReplyDeleteThe theme from “The Man in the Black Suit” by Stephen King is that once innocence is lost, it is never regained. The main character, Gary, is a young boy when this story is told. He encounters what he thinks is the devil, and holds onto that memory for the rest of his life. Before Gary saw what he thought was the devil, he was an innocent boy and had done no wrong in his life. Gary tells this story from his perspective as an old man in a nursing home. He is terrified by his own death. When he dies, will he go to heaven and go to God, who he prayed to his whole life, or will the man in the black suit return and take him to hell? Gary is still traumatized by the events that happened eighty-one years before this story was told.
